FAQ

How much does the workshop cost? Nothing, it's free! You just need to be excited! And we can help out with public transport costs if necessary.

Who is this aimed for? Rails Girls Wellington is open to all those who identify as women or girls with basic knowledge of working with a computer. All ages may attend, but we would prefer very young people to come with a parent or guardian. Please bring your laptop.

Can men attend? Yes, but you need to be accompanied by an interested woman. Also, girls are given a priority.

Do you have a code of conduct? Yes – it is here. We expect all attendees, coaches, and sponsor representatives to behave respectfully to make sure everyone has a great time.

I know how to program - How can I help? We’re also looking for people to be coaches and help out with teaching the Rails Girls guides. Email us.

Saturday 27th August

8:30 - 9:30	Installation party For those who have had issues with installation - bring your laptop, so we can help you install Ruby on Rails.
9:30 - 9:45	Registration Get in early for coffee, thanks Havana Coffee!
9:45 - 10:00	Introduction Your organisers will take you through housekeeping and a rough plan for the weekend.
10:00 - 10:30	Talk "Programming is the closest thing we have to magic" - Charlie Ablett
10:30 - 12:00	Ruby With the help of your coaches, and your new friends, start learning the Ruby programming language with tryruby.org.
12:00 - 12:30	Talk "What is a web app?" - Megan Bowra-Dean
12:30 - 13:00	Lunch Provided by Food Envy!
13:00 - 15:00	Ruby on Rails With the help of your coaches, go through the Rails Girls app guide to create your own web app.
15:00 - 15:15	Break We need cupcakes, stat!
15:15 - 15:30	Talk "Monsters invade Wellington: a collaborative short story" - Jevon Wright
15:30 - 16:30	Ruby on Rails Continue working through the Rails Girls guides.
16:30 - 17:00	Wrap up Recap what you've learned today, and start making a plan for tomorrow.

Sunday 28th August

10:15 - 12:30	Ruby Wanna go deeper into the mysterious magic that is the Ruby programming language? This is for you! Hosted by Megan Bowra-Dean.
